GUEST: My mother had a friend, Miss Foster, and Miss Foster was 90 and going into a nursing home, and mother said, "She would like you to come over and pick out something from the apartment." And I saw this young boy, and I said, "He's darling; may I have him?" And Miss Foster said, "I'd love you to have him." APPRAISER: This is a sculpture by an artist named Augusta Savage. And she was a black artist who worked in New York in the 1920s and '30s. And this is her most famous work. It's called Gamin. And it's actually inscribed on the front, "Gamin."GUEST: Uh-huh.APPRAISER: And the piece is signed on the back with her name, "Savage." And what's interesting about this piece is that while it looks like it's bronze, it's actually made out of plaster, and it's painted to look like bronze. And if you look on the bottom here, you can see the white plaster. She didn't have the money to cast them in bronze. It was a very expensive process. This is a wonderful piece, it really capture the spirit of the young boy.GUEST: It does.APPRAISER: It comes in this size, and there's another version that's slightly larger.GUEST: Oh, did she make many of them?APPRAISER: No, not really, because there just wasn't a demand for them, and I think even if she made a lot of them, because they're plaster, they're very fragile. In fact, yours knocked over and cracked.GUEST: Yes.APPRAISER: Well, I think you might be surprised. This is worth between $15,000 and $20,000.GUEST: With a crack?APPRAISER: With a crack, yes. Isn't that great?GUEST: That's wonderful. I cannot believe that. I...APPRAISER: It can even bring more. GUEST: Thank you very much.

Sometimes I wonder if God uses me as a vessel to do something for him. I always try to approach everyone I meet even enemies with kindness and love. I'm thankful for the wonderful opportunities I have had to *bump* into some amazing individuals.

Yesterday, it was SO random but I met a Tuskegee Airman, Charles McGhee, while I was riding on an elevator with my Mom at Union Station in Washington, DC. We realized we were with a Tuskegee Airman when we saw the gentleman's jacket which was a red bomber jacket and it read, "Tuskegee Airman". I almost cried for I know a lot of the Tuskegee Airman are deceased so it was an honor to ride the elevator with someone who is a history maker.

When I get the picture from my Mom, I'll make sure to share but she took a picture with me and him. He is so cute. I cannot believe he is 90 years old. God blessed him with a long life. He shared with us that George Lucas has been working on a film about them so I will be the FIRST in line to see it.

MILWAUKEE -- A Milwaukee teacher is charged with disorderly conduct after punishing a first-grader by cutting her hair.Lamya Cammon is angry, confused, and scared by the incident last week in which the apparently frustrated teacher cut one of her braids off after she wouldn't stop playing with them in class.Cammon, 7, sports a few dozen braids, but one is conspicuously absent."She told me to stop playing with it. Then cut it off and sent me back to my desk," Cammon said.Cammon's a first-grader at Congress Elementary and said her teacher used a pair of classroom scissors to cut off one of the braids after she absent-mindedly kept playing with them."Tell me how you play with your hair. Show me what that means," 12 News reporter Nick Bohr said to Cammon."I wasn't playing with it that loud," Cammon said.She said the teacher called her to the front of the room and cut it in front of the whole class."What did you do?" Bohr asked."I went to my desk and cried. And they was laughing," Cammon said. "She threw it away, and she said, 'Now what you gonna go home and say to your momma? ' And I said, 'That you cut off my hair,'" Cammon said.Cammon's mother is furious. She went to the school and confronted the teacher."I said, 'Well, you know, you cut a lot of her hair off.' And she was like, 'Well, I do apologize.' She said, 'But I was frustrated,'" Cammon's mother, Helen Cunningham, said.The Milwaukee Public Schools District said it is going through the disciplinary process with the teacher, who remains in class, although Cammon has been moved to a different classroom by the principal."The main thing is, from the heart of the principal, and me speaking for the district, we're very sorry that this happened," MPS spokeswoman Roseann St. Aubin said.Cammon's mother said she appreciates the apology but said the district should seriously question whether the teacher should keep her job."Why would we want someone like that teaching our kids? During World War II, Mr. Keene enlisted in the Army Air Force. He attained the rank of lieutenant and served with the Tuskegee Airmen in the 332d Fighter Group, but never flew because white pilots were given preference, his family said.

This is special on two counts: one since I didn't bring you a InspirationSounds podcast last month and second I have been blessed to be the GRAMMY community blogger for the 52nd GRAMMY Awards for the Gospel genre so what else to do but to bring you GRAMMY edition podcast. You know how I love blending Gospel/Christian with some of the best instrumental tunes but this one has a little twist: each of the Gospel songs are up for a nomination for a GRAMMY.

It's pretty cool the power of instrumental music and when it's blended with men and women of God that loves the Lord it's a win-win situation. 2009MLFM Spotlight; Steely Dan/Donald Fagen[part III + Bonus]

Funny, when checking out the genre category for Steely Dan they are placed in the "Rock" category and to me they should be placed in the Jazz category. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker are true music geeks and are not ashamed it at all. They are not getting Botox treatments or getting face lifts. They focus on what they know best, bringing quality music, intelligent lyrics to the masses. You have heard me say this time and time again in regards to how Steely Dan and solo projects from Donald Fagen lifts my spirits whenever I'm feeling down and it kinda weird considering that some of their work is about depressing matters, go figure.

When growing up listening to their music it always strikes me in awe with the "Who's Who" of session musicians that show up on their albums. Not only can these musicians hold their own when it comes to improvising but are on point when writing music. I love the trilogy LP from Fagen because it goes from the wild ideas from a young man to a middle age man coming to terms to his age to finally tackling and embracing that touchy subject, death.

"The Nightfly" is one of my favorite LPs in the since of I can remember being young and being fasinated with sci-fi movies, digging science, wondering when we would have flying cars(which I'm still waiting on). This album was released the year I was a junior in high school and was beginning to discover my taste in music, the time I realized that I was different when it came to my taste in music and was not ashamed of it. (I saw this because growing up in a place where you were thought being weird when listening to music other than R&B).

Reading through the list of musicians that performed on The Nightfly brings a huge smile on my face and I am so blessed I read liner notes because if I didn't I would not have known about Rob Mounsey who would later produce for Michael Franks or Marcus Miller and Will Lee, two of the baddest bassist around who has recorded with so many great artists and Marcus Miller who would later produce albums for the late Luther Vandross and Will Lee is the bassist for the Paul Schaffer Band on Late Night with David Letterman and both bassist has performed for David Sanborn. Then there is Greg Phillinganes, Jeff Porcaro, Chuck Rainey, Valerie Simpson, Steve Khan, Larry Carlton, Randy Brecker and the list just on this album is just mind-blowing.

I could go on but I'm not...just check out these tunes and enjoy. I hope you dig this line up as much as I did putting it together.

Message We ALL Need To Hear

The cool thing about being a Follower of Christ is that sometimes we as Christians may not agree on some issues but many times we want the same thing. I have to admit I may not agree with Dr. James Dobson of Focus on the Family on many levels. I don't question his love for God because I know he is a true believer but by us being from different cultures I feel we will never see eye to eye but hearing this 2 part message is something many parents today need to hear in regards to wayward adult children.

Last night I went to see the film "PRECIOUS" directed by Lee Daniels at the BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) Rose Cinemas with my U of Mich friend & mentee Aja Wood (@alwaysaja). Twitter mate @JessieNYC asked me to share my critique. Really love the community of intellectuals tweeting about race, racial justice and social inequities. It's a richer community than on FB imho.
